Hematoxylin or Haematoxylin, a basophilic dye extracted from the tree Haematoxylum campechianum, is often used together with eosin (H&E stain) in histological study under light microscope. The dye is also used alone as a nuclear counterstain in immunohistochemistry. To produce a functional dye, hematoxylin is oxidized to hematein and subsequently is bound to one of several metal ions including aluminum (Al+3), iron (Fe+3) and chromium (Cr+3).
Tested for use in Delafield-Heidenhain staining.
